Where panels are required
Standard 96 expects access openings at every point the system needs inspection and cleaning:
- At every change of direction in the duct, including offsets behind the hood
- At every horizontal run, with spacing that allows full coverage of the duct interior
- Where the duct meets the hood plenum and where it penetrates the roof
- At the fan connection, so the fan inlet and housing can be degreased
Why inspectors flag missing panels
A missing panel means a section of duct was never opened, so nobody can prove it is clean. Inspectors treat the inaccessible run as a fuel load and write it up. Insurance adjusters ask the same question after a fire, and a service report that lists sections as not accessible gives them an easy target.
What installing panels involves
Panels are gasketed steel doors, listed for grease ducts, sized to let tools and hands reach the whole interior. Installing them means cutting the duct, sealing the frame and keeping the opening accessible afterward, which is why storage and shelving placed against ducts cause so many compliance problems. Once the panels are in, every future cleaning can reach the full run.

Frequently asked questions
- Can access panels be installed on an old duct?
- Yes. Panels can be cut into existing ducts as long as the location does not compromise structure or clearances, and it is a one-time improvement quoted separately.
- Do panels leak grease or air?
- Listed panels use gasketed, latched frames designed for grease duct service. A properly installed panel seals as well as the original duct wall.
